Promoting healthy behavior is a primary goal of health coaches and practitioners. However, it is often quite difficult for patients to develop and maintain new behaviors. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a person-centered, goal-oriented method of communication designed to elicit and strengthen intrinsic motivation for positive change. MI has been shown to be effective in helping individuals develop and maintain a wide variety of health behaviors.

During this two-day workshop you will: 1) become familiar with the spirit of Motivational interviewing; 2) experience and understand the basic principles of MI; and 3) practice MI for health behavior change. At the end of the weekend, you will have the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to use Motivational Interviewing techniques to assist others in engaging in healthy behaviors.

The nature of fertility is mysterious and wondrous. Acupuncture can have powerful effects on the ability to conceive and carry to term. Looking deeply into the biological intricacies of the reproductive cycle through the lens of Chinese Medicine, we will discuss how to craft treatments and use point combinations to address your patients’ specific needs and to affect optimum change for their bodies, minds, and spirits. Infertility can have deep and devastating effects on the spirit, and women may experience a cycle of hope and grief month after month. Specific points and point combinations can soothe and heal their spirits.

Because nutrition plays a significant role in restoring balance to the body, we will also look at the way Chinese Medicine views the energy of certain foods and teach you how to coach your patients to deeply understand that food is medicine. We will explore evidence-based dietary recommendations and herbs, including the ways in which they complement energetic or traditional recommendations. Tips for interacting with reproductive endocrinologists and other conventional medical practitioners also will be provided.

You will leave this course with a deeper understanding of infertility as well as a greater confidence in your ability to affect optimum change in your patients who are struggling with infertility by helping them create a balance between body, mind, and spirit.

9:30 AM - 4:30 PM
What are the internal states, or patterns of disharmony, which cause us to perceive neutral factors in the environment to be pathogens? In an allergic reaction, how does the hyper-reactivity of the wei qi affect the sensory orifices and the clarity of our perceptions? What are the different ways in which the channels and collaterals help us adapt to changing and toxic environments? We will explore allergies and the concept of the immune system as viewed by Chinese Medicine.

The scope of our discussion will include treatment strategies using both the primary channels and the secondary vessels, as well as Chinese Herbal Medicine. Insights from the Chinese Medicine specialty of Wai Ke/External Medicine will be integrated into an understanding of Five Element Constitutional dynamics.

Saturday, May 15, 2010 - Sunday, May 16, 2010
9:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Traditional Chinese Medicine has an essentially ‘embryonic’ view of life. The virtue of the child, zi, has always been held in the highest esteem by the ancients for its innocence, its closeness to the “source,” and its ebullient qi. The dynamic equilibrium, so evident in the growing child, has much to teach us about our own health and well-being. Can we approach life with the same playfulness with which a child discovers the world? Can we tap that utter pliancy within ourselves and those we treat in order to foster real recovery from the natural challenges of life?

We will explore how to recapture the spirit of the child using the principles of Chinese Medicine and developmental pediatrics for two primary purposes: 1) to reveal a deeper understanding of the dynamics of growth, and 2) to learn to apply these principals in the treatment of common disorders of childhood such as asthma, allergies, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and autism.
