Herb Room Compounding Assistant

We are currently seeking a person to provide assistance in the Tai Sophia Herb Room.  Our preference is for applicants holding a graduate or undergraduate degree in herbal medicine or related CAM field. Individuals with a pharmacy or laboratory research background are also encouraged to apply.

Project Manager/Network Administrator

The primary purpose of this new position is to plan, direct, and coordinate the development,  implementation, and on-going functionality of Tai Sophia’s information technology, its centralized network system, and Institute-wide user and collateral technology processes, including interfacing and support service to its satellite locations in Baltimore and Silver Spring. 

The incumbent will provide overall project oversight of a new campus wide data management system in collaboration with various departmental “super users”, in addition to the supervision and support of help desk staff. 

This position is an ideal opportunity to build a dynamic IT team in support of Tai Sophia Institute.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Lead project manager in charge of planning, implementation, and direction for existing and future systems and technologies within the Institute, including major new initiative with campus wide software/hardware system.
  • Provide leadership and coordinate technical support expertise for academic and business areas, and webmaster.
  • Work cross-functionally to solve problems and implement changes to support business requirements.
  • Create and maintain an information technology project plan that communicates tasks, milestone dates, monitors progress, resource allocation, and reports status to management and/or project teams.
  • Create end user support and trouble shooting documents.
  • Ensure and maintain functionality of hardware/software applications in support of end user functionality and coordinate training as appropriate.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Five-years of IT experience with two-years in IT project management; Bachelor’s degree in a related area preferred.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

Assistant Instructor - Course:   508 Acupuncture Theory (Fall Trimester, 2008)

We are currently seeking a person to assist the lead teacher in the basic theory class taught in the first trimester of the M.Ac. program.  The course combines instruction with a great deal of experiential work to deliver the fundamental laws and gifts of the Five Elements to beginning students. This course is delivered via 35-40 classroom hours each trimester in the Fall and Spring trimesters.

Herbal Medicine

Hours: 6-8 hours per week

Tai Sophia Institute has an opening for a Clinic Administrator for the Herbal Medicine Program.  This position reports to the Program Director and Clinical Division Chairs and coordinates with the Associate Program Director, Academic Deans, Clinic Coordinator, Clinic Faculty, Safety and Compliance Administrator, and Human Resources Director.

Responsibilities/Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the successful staffing and the administration of the Herbal Program Student Clinic. 
  • Prepare clinic schedules and staff each clinic accordingly.
  • Review clinic schedule plan with the director
  • Oversee and staff the Herbal Program clinic pre-orientation, orientation, pre-clinic partnering orientation
  • Oversee policy for running the clinic:
    • Student evaluation of clinic faculty and clinic program
    • Student conduct in clinic
    • Dress code
    • Communicator role
    • Progress through clinic
  • Facilitate meetings of Herbal Medicine clinic supervisors

Clinical Supervisor/Core Group Leader - Role: #2

This position is for Wednesday mornings in the Baltimore Clinic. The start date will be September 24, 2008. Applicants must be current on all requirements.  Primary responsibility for core group students throughout their time in clinic.  Observe, instruct and evaluate students in the areas outlined by the Learning Outcomes and Stages of Learning.   Provide support, coaching and challenge to facilitate the each student's successful completion of the clinical experience.

Requirements for Supervisors in the Faculty Supervised Student Clinic

The following must be on file:
  • Curriculum Vitae (every 5 yrs.)
  • Current Maryland License (whenever a new license is issued)
  • OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens Training (annually as presented at Tai Sophia)
  • Documentation of current PPD Test (annually) or if PPD was positive, physician’s report of negative chest x-ray (once every 5 yrs)

The COMPLETION date is noted for:

  • CCAOM Clean Needle Certification
  • Hepatitis B Vaccination – report of completed series or signed declination of the Hepatitis B  vaccine 

All of these documents must be current for all clinic supervisors and substitutes. Candidate must be a licensed acupuncturist with 5 years in substantial (20-25 patients/wk) practice.

  • Counsel and document when a concern about a student’s behavior or performance arises.
  • Liaison with the Clinic Director, other supervisors and the Level III Dean of Students when a concern about a student arises.
  • Remind, review and teach all aspects of theory, rapport, treatment planning, skills, etc.
  • Uphold and enforce the ethics standards as put forth by the State Board of Acupuncture.
  • Coordinate with the #2 and #3 supervisors for the effective delivery of the core group and clinic sessions.
  • Ensure that each patient receives appropriate treatment.
  • Evaluate and sanction when a core group student can start a new patient.
  • Evaluate and sanction when a core group student may begin treating on different days and at different sites.
  • Access the student’s needling technique and certify that the student is competent to needle without supervision and that the student competently uses clean need technique.
  • Access the student’s ability to competently perform akabane testing and use moxa.
  • Review records for completeness prior to the first treatment with needles and sign the checklist on the front of the chart.
  • Review the student’s Tracking Sheet at least once a month.
  • Meet with students individually for to mentor and to give the student individual progress reports.
  • Mentor students informally during face to face meetings, phone or email as needed and appropriate.
  • Ensure that students are dressed appropriately; counsel and document if they are not.
  • Review partnering journal and sign students off for partnered treatment participation.
  • Review and sign the student’s Monthly Report, circle the appropriate stage of learning.
  • Review insurance forms for accuracy and completeness and sign them before the student submits them to the Insurance Coordinator.
  • Review and sign the clinic journal of supervised students.
  • Review medical records to determine any issues related to treatment or follow-up items and use this review as a teaching tool.
  • Review and sign treatment sheets of supervised students.
  • Observe, instruct and evaluate the students in their ability to do the following:
    • Build and manage a practice
    • Diagnose the patient
    • Create a treatment plan
    • Properly execute a treatment
    • Make proper referrals for the patient
    • Contribute to the core group
  • Attend supervisor meetings as directed by the Div. Chair, M.Ac. Clinical Practices
  • Attend Faculty Consensus Meetings as directed by the Level III Dean of Students.

  • Remind students to have preface sheets completed and available for Supervisors.
  • Call students out of the treatment rooms after 20 minutes for supervisory  consultation and help supervisors and students connect when necessary.
  • Counsel and document when a concern about the student’s behavior or performance arises.
  • Keep supervisors appraised of student flow and also of those who are waiting for consults or pulses.
  • Check points, as required, on all patients prior to treatment and provide students with point location and needling feedback appropriate to their phase of learning.
  • Spot check patient records for student practitioner and supervisor signatures on treatment sheets and supervisor signatures on the chart checklist.
  • Assist and monitor students in their use of the Patient Tracking Form.
  • Provide appropriate feedback and evaluation to students in the areas outlined by the Learning Outcomes in Coming Full Circle.
  • Observe student's needling technique at the request of the #1 Supervisor until the student has been signed off to needle without supervision.  Provide feedback to the student about his/her needling.
  • Observe and evaluate the student's explanation of the consent form and HIPAA forms to the patient, and sign as witness that the form was explained, questions fully answered, and the form freely signed.
  • Review patient records for completeness prior to the first needle treatment and sign the checklist on the chart when requested by the supervisor.
  • Help the students learn to use the schedule book with ease and harmony.
  • Periodically spot check the schedule book for accuracy and legibility.
  • Periodically spot check that the file cabinet with patient records is locked.
  • At the end of the clinic day, see that students have left treatment rooms and the Core Group Room clean, neat and that the Communicator is doing his/her job.

Transformative Practice Group Leader (Fall Trimester, 2008)

Course – ACU 626 Transformative  (note:  this course replaces the former ACU 626 Mentor Group)

We are currently seeking leaders for Monday and Thursday Transformative Practice Groups within Tai Sophia Institute’s Master of Acupuncture (M.Ac.) program.  Sessions run from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. and groups meet five times each trimester.

RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to:

  • Facilitate group discussion to support peer coaching regarding learning issues raised by students related to participation in or completion of acupuncture classes or clinic.
  • Provide instruction and guide group discussion supporting clear and effective sharing of teaching stories by students.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidates must have a solid understanding of the principles and practices of the SOPHIA work as presented within the M.Ac. program.
  • Prior training/experience in group facilitation or teaching would be valuable.

Tai Sophia students who are currently enrolled in ACU 626, H557, H657, or H757 are ineligible to apply.
